Why go organic?
Organic food, schmorganic food! Is there really something to all the hype? You bet there is! Organic foods are produced without the use of pesticides, chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, or growth hormones.
- Organic farms promote environmental conditions that are often ignored by conventional mass producing farms. These farms also prevent dangerous chemicals from entering our natural water supplies. This literally means a healthier community from the ground up.
- If this doesn’t entice you, then the explosive flavors found within organic products should certainly sway you to climb aboard the organic train.
- True, at times, organic food can be more expensive, however, depending on where you live, the price disparity between organic and conventional produce may not too large. For instance, buying organic store brand products versus brand names is likely to keep more money in your pocket. And while it may seem outrageous to spend $4.99 per pound for organic apples, ask yourself how much you paid for that last box of popsicles or bag of chips. When possible, spending slightly more on healthy alternatives to replace some of the junk we normally fill our shopping carts up will truly benefit our bodies when filling up our tummies.
- Make a gradual switch to organic. Try buying one product every time you hit the store.
- Not feeling particularly adventurous? Start with the basics such as pasta, milk, fruit and veggies.
Ultimately, the wellbeing of livestock, the farmers who grow the produce, and you and your family, all benefit from organically-grown products.
