Fueling your picky toddler’s tank
Okay, step away from the cookie. The holidays are over and this means bringing your whole family back into healthier eating habits- yes, even your picky toddler.
- Toddlers are notoriously picky eaters that often settle on eating 1-2 types of food for weeks at a time. Offering a variety of healthy choices empowers your tot to seek a more nutritious route. Keep a container of all sorts of mixed goodies, including chopped veggies and fruit, at eye level in the fridge. Allowing him to dip his bite sized broccoli into a less than healthy dipping sauce might also encourage bold tasting behavior. Caramel, cheeses, jelly or dressing may do the trick.
- Be patient- It will take some time before your child gets used the variety of flavors and textures that different foods provide. Introduce a bite of a high textured food, such as peas, alongside an old favorite. A teaspoon of vanilla yogurt may help that new textured food a go down easier.
- Be flexible in allowing your child to tackle the items on his plate in his preferred order. Remind them though that eating their fav dish first means that those carrots will have to be eaten as dessert.
- Your toddler does not need huge quantities of food to have a full belly so trust that one or two missed meals does not mean she’s going hungry. Toddlers typically only need a third or even a fourth sized amount of an adult meal.
- If his little body needs to move between sampling his chicken and nibbling that apple, allow him to take a break rather than forcing him to sit still for the duration of the meal.
- Always offer your child the meal prepared for the family, but go all out in creatively designing his dish in a unique way. In order to be appealing to your child’s palate it needs to be visually appealing as well.
While our New Year’s resolutions often revolve around diet and exercise, modeling healthy eating habits throughout the year help your picky toddler grow to practice the same.
