Teething Baby
Remember the agony of your permanent teeth piercing the skin to replace the gummy smile you so proudly wore in order to bank that tooth fairy money? Fortunately, the pain of our first teeth, our baby teeth, coming through is a memory long forgotten. While some infants don’t appear bothered by this experience, for others, teething can be a particularly painful time. Of course, teethers, baby aspirin or acetaminophen, and teething gels are common practices. Other methods to soothe the pain:
- Try briefly freezing a washcloth to ensure it’s cool and soft and allow your child to gum it.
- A slightly frozen bagel or banana also gives your little one the chance to mouth away the pain.
- Cold foods such as yogurt, applesauce, or a smoothie might also help.
- Try to use a vibrating tooth brush to briefly caress the lips or gums.
- Gently massage around the upper and lower lips in a heart-like motion using the pads of your fingertips to reduce possible muscle tension around the mouth region. Directly massaging the gums themselves can soothe your baby if they are able to tolerate it. Make sure your hands are clean.
- You don’t need to wait to see teeth to start baby dental care. It’s a good idea to start the hygiene routine early by rubbing baby’s gums with a washcloth dampened with water only. This also gets them used to this type of tactile stimulation.
Consult your doctor if your baby develops a high fever that is likely not attributable to teething and something more significant.
