Teaching Responsibility & Respect to a 2-Year Old?
No, this isn’t an open casting call for the latest Mission Impossible movie.
A number of activities can help lay the foundation to grow a respectful and responsible adult.
- Doll play for toddlers is a great activity to demonstrate the ways to nurture another. Encourage her to position the baby gently, feed slowly and hug softly.
- Interactions with pets also serve as great opportunities to show gentle kindness when handling, while encouraging responsible care when asking your toddler to help fill the food or water bowl.
- Incorporating the ritual of massage in your home not only fuels your child’s development, but also sets the stage for fostering compassionate and respectful relationships. Make a game out of swapping back rubs or encourage your toddler to give the new baby a mini foot rub.
- Make household activities fun, such as using homemade sock puppets to wipe up the counter or making a human chain to pick up pieces of laundry moving from one child to parent to laundry basket. Or have a race to see who can pick up the toys the fastest. Activities such as these instill the importance of looking after yourself and can be achieved more happily when fun is injected into the mix!
As with all other development, modeling the values and morals you hope to instill in your child is endlessly important.
- Taking responsibility for our own mistakes or poor judgment helps facilitate your toddler’s ability to recognize the consequences of her own behavior. Verbalize things like “Mommy made a mistake” or “Mommy could have been nicer”.
Showing patience with a slow-moving cashier or respect to a difficult neighbor reflects a message that while it is very easy to become frustrated, it is more valuable to relay compassion and understanding.
