Infant Massage for your Blossoming Baby
The benefits of infant massage are numerous, both physically and emotionally, for you and your child.
- Massage promotes relaxation for parent and baby through the shared experience of being mindful and present together. Using touch to soothe your child’s muscles will actually relax your body as you simultaneously breathe and de-stress during this special bonding time with your baby.
- The quality of your relationship with your baby blooms as you and your child learn to communicate with one another. Through massage, your touch, voice, and eyes will speak of your love and commitment. Your baby will respond with her own cues and joyfully share the experience. Your understanding of her desires evolves, which will further develop and reinforce your ability to nurture and support your baby’s emotional and social development. Your baby’s development of secure attachment and sense of self is your gift to her. For more information about promoting your baby's secure attachment click here.
- Massage can help support your baby’s overall health and development by:
- Stimulating and regulating the systems of the body (i.e., respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and organization systems.)
- Improving your baby’s quality of sleep - and potentially yours in return! Massage can also reduce colic or pain symptoms associated with constipation and teething and overall muscular tension.
- With preterm infants, massage has been found to contribute to increased weight gain, shorter hospital stays, and improved social and emotional responsiveness (The Touch Research Institute, Tiffany Field, Ph.D.) www.miami.edu/touch-research
Additionally, the benefits for our community and our world cannot be ignored. The type of relationships formed within every family is important to all of us. When compassion, love and security are conveyed through touch from parent to child, our children grow to extend the same message to others. The dialogue of respect, concern for those around them and kindness are thereby characteristics our children grow to exemplify.
* Of note for breastfeeding mothers: As well as helping moms relax, infant massage can also promote an increase flow of hormones, including oxytocin- which is the hormone that releases milk. However, if having difficulty breastfeeding, additional services may be needed.
International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and breastfeeding mom extraordinaire, Veronica Tingzon, I.B.C.L.C., is a great resource. Visit her at www.theoriginalcomfortfood.com.
